Punto Rojo by The Landrace Team

The name Punto Rojo speaks for itself. The pistils of the flowers of these plants are red. This is why it’s called so. It comes from the mountains of the interior of the country. In Colombia the area is called Tierradentro an it literally means The Land of the interior. Plants are, or should we say were, cultivated both on the highlands and the lowlands. As in most cases, the plants grown up on the mountains, at higher altitudes, receive more and direct sunlight, therefore producing more psychoactive effects that can be translated in feelings of euphoria. Perhaps this is the reason why they have gained such mind-blowing effects, as a result of adaptation to the harsh environment in which this Landrace cannabis originates. Then you can also find plants that are grown at lower altitudes, the low mountains and lands. These plants from the south of the country and low mountains also deliver a very special psychoactive buzz which is also euphoric but carries along with it also a body effect which can be felt at the end when the effect is wearing off.

Mind you, if you’re thinking that these plants have indica effects you are far from the truth. These are 100% pure real Sativas, motivators, day brighteners, leaving you with your head clear and with a lot of euphoria and laughters attached to them, you’ll have a grin from ear to year for several hours. A feeling of well-being will pervade you leaving you on a cloud of happiness. This may be the reason why most Colombians are happy people! The Punto Rojo plants from Colombia show great vigor since the beginning of their vegetative phase which can take up to 5 months and the flowering goes on for just as much! So be prepared in case you want to give them a try! You’ll need a lot of patience, the patience of a sativa, but you’ll be rewarded! Whatever you’re gonna be using these plants for, flowers, buds, leaves, extracts, oils, concentrates etc. you’ll have medicine in your hands, your appetite will increase and your morale will boost up to the stars!

Talking about shapes and structures of these plants, well you will most definitely find conical shapes, or the so called Christmas trees with the ones coming from the high mountains having very thin leaves whereas the ones coming from the low mountains having leaves a bit wider and showing pink and red pistils. There will be also some purple phenotyopes in both the high and the low mountains. Here you can see them at a very young age, at just seven weeks. Not even two months. They are all showing very thin first leaves. By the way, during growth you may notice wider leaves and you may be wondering if there are some ‘Cripi’ genes in them. Far from it. Let’s dispel this myth. Even pure sativas can display broad and chubby leaves when growing, especially at the beginning. Vietnam genetics is another example. You will know it’s a pure sativa when the classic Christmas tree structure and those wispy buds will start showing up. That being said it’s also possible and not uncommon that some plants will show the skinniest leaves in veg, and flower with that slight arching droopiness suggesting the possibility of them being highland sativas, showing much more resin and aroma than other plants.

As the seedlings developed, three distinct phenotypes presented. One very big and vigorous, another with thin leaves with strong growth and easy rooting suggesting it may be a highland sativa and the other plants being very similar in structure. The punto Rojo plants are grown in the Huila region, south of Colombia. Huila is one of the warmest region in Colombia with an average daily high temperature of 32° degrees Celsius. It is yearlong warm or hot. It’s a tropical climate with significant precipitation even during the driest months, therefore you can imagine what type of climate these plants have been adapting to. Hot and humid. Naturally they have developed, over the years, a great resistance to fungal pests and extreme temperatures. The genetic potential of these plants is huge. Growing in Colombia which has a 12/12 photoperiod throughout the year these plants reach heights of 3 metres and above nonetheless. In natural outdoor environment in Colombia it’s not uncommon to have yields of up to five hundred grams per plant. Ost of the seeds are medium – small sized and pretty black with a uniform colour although some are lighter brown and also dark tanned veined. The reason these plants were named Tierra Adentro is because of their origin. Tierra Adentro belonged to a department full of mountains and deep canyons. The Spaniards called this area Tierra Adentro (inland) because they felt enclosed in between the mountains.

Talking about smells, they are distinctly Colombian, that is, exotic, piney, slightly sweet. You’ll know what is meant here if you rub the stems between your thumb and your index finger. For those who didn’t know it, the word Punto Rojo means Red Dot, the picture below shows why it is so:

Some comments by a dear fellow sativa grower who, with his significant indoor contribution, helped to make this post possible:

The photo belows shows the plant at fifteen weeks into flowering

We leave you with some comments from the grower who made this post possible with his indoor contribution:

“I have had an opportunity to smoke some quick-dried bud from Punto Rojo, which was harvested just short of 16 weeks. It’s not terribly potent in terms of bulk THC content, I’d guess about 15%, but the effect is very, very good. The effect lasts for at least 4-5 hours. The effect is psychedelic, a little trippy, laugh-inducing, day brightener. I took a couple puffs yesterday morning then went out to walk 18 holes of golf on a perfect spring day, and I had a nice, tuned-in, up, happy buzz through the entire round. Made a lot of good shots and utterly destroyed my opponents in the skins game. Happy weed.”

Some more comments by the grower: “ I harvested the remaining three plants at 140 days, after 20 weeks of flowering. They could’ve easily gone another month… These Colombians just never want to finish. The smoke is powerful; it’s curing nicely. That plant yielded 90 grams of dried bud, but there’s a lot of seed in there.
A word or two about hermaphroditism in Punto Rojo: it happens, a lot. Only one of these six plants remained completely sexually stable –  the red-pointed one. Two went half male half female at 7 weeks, and three of the remaining four threw a lot of nanners in late flower, after about 12-14 weeks. It happens with wild landraces. That coupled with the rarity of males (I got zero) means that you’ll need to run a lot of plants to find enough stable plants for breeding/preservation. But if you’re breeding out intersex issues, is that preservation? “ – The answer is clearly NO. Nature tries always to impose itself upon human intervention. Nature and life simply want to reproduce. It’s in the genes. So it has come up with a lot of mechanisms. Hermaphroditism being one of them. Life simply asks and wants to perpetuate itself. Hermaphroditism is one way of attaining  this goal.

With smoke tests pending on three plants, I will say that the TLT Punto Rojo looks to me like the real McCoy, a pure Colombian sativa landrace. Here’s some pics at harvest time.
